You will be exactly as happy as you choose to be.
This is one of the many motto’s I live my life by. It’s one of the few ideas that my mother instilled in me that I actually follow. Granted, I used to roll my eyes as a teenager when she would wake me up and say, “you decide whether you are happy today or not.”
Now that I’m a mom, I find myself repeating something similar to my kids when they’re upset. I say, “you decide whether you will have a good day or bad day.” I firmly believe that when you wake in the morning, you can make a conscious decision whether you will have a positive day or if you will be down in the dumps. No matter what life throws your way, you determine your attitude and how your outlook will reflect on your mood on any given day. You decide how that mood will reflect your interaction with others.
Now, if you are really in a negative way, you can absolutely choose to be in a sh*t mood…and that’s ok. Just know that you alone are making that decision. There’s nothing in the atmosphere and there’s nothing that someone else said or did that is causing your bad day. Also, know that just because you want to be in a crap mood, doesn’t mean that you have to treat others negatively. Own your attitude and move on with the day. I have to say, once I committed to deciding to be happy, my confidence and overall satisfaction has gone through the roof!
That’s not to say that I don’t still have bad days. Take for example, today. It’s a dreary, rainy, grey day in northern Virginia and I’m down. I’m 12 days out from my first competition and I’m tired. Tired of being on a diet, tired of the daily grind, tired of others’ negativity rubbing off on me. However, what sets me apart from others is the fact that even though I’m some-kind-of-way today, I’m owning up to it. I’m still grinding away at my prep, I’m continuing my client check-ins with a positive attitude, and I’m determined to be kind to my family even when they push my buttons.
How are you feeling today? Are you choosing to have a good day or a bad day? Make a conscious decision to own your feelings today. Give it a try, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
